About the Band

The South Canberra Youth Wind Orchestra (SCYWO) is a community concert band comprised of young musicians aged between 12 and 29 years of age. The band is a non-profit organization run by a committee of band members and parents, whose aim is to provide a relaxed, fun and social atmosphere for young people to enjoy making music. SCYWO has been growing in size over recent years and currently has 60 members. We rehearse one evening per week during the school terms and perform regularly throughout the year at community events as well as hosting our own performance nights, which feature local school bands and musical groups.

SCYWO began in 1994 when a local high school music teacher and his students created the group in order to expand their efforts. For the past 8 years, SCYWO has been performing under the directorship of Nathan Sciberras, a local musician and instrumental music educator.

SCYWO maintains a busy schedule of annual events including a weekend camp, competing in the National Eisteddfod, a spring concert night, a fundraising trivia night and an end of year concert. We have also recently begun a schedule of biennial tours starting with Melbourne in 2008 and New Zealand in 2010.

Activities, Gigs, and Performance details

We perform regurally at Esteddfods, School/Church/Nursing home fetes, community events like the weston creek community festival, our own spring and end of year concerts, floriade plus anything else we might get asked to do.

We are happy to perform at various events throughout the year, either on an annual basis or as a one-off. Contact the committee for more information.

An important event in our year is the Trivia Night, which has been a great success for the band in the past, and helps to fundraise funds for the band. We also complete other fundraising activities, like choclate selling and BBQ's to fundraise.

We are organising a Tour to Melbourne next year, and in the past we have toured to Tassie.
